You will feast your eyes in Madrid on foot. Walk up the Gran Via, the city’s main artery. Shopping fans will love it here, even for football shopping! Indeed, along the avenue you will find the official shops of the city’s two leading clubs. All you need to equip yourself before going to the stadium. The Gran Via is also home to Madrid’s “skyline” of skyscrapers, some of which offer the best views of the city. Also on foot, the more popular La Latina district is a must-see. It is one of the most typical areas of Madrid. It is full of bars and restaurants and is a mecca for Madrid’s culture.
On the way to the Wanda Metropolitano…

-
La Plaza Mayor : emblematic square of Madrid
-
La Puerta del Sol : kilometre 0 : the centre of the country !

La Plaza de España : and the Cervantes monument

La Plaza de la Vila : oldest square of the city
Wanda Metropolitano
Spotlight on the Wanda Metropolitano, a brand-new stadium that saw its lawn walked on for the first time in 2017. It is the result of the massive transformation of the former Peineta Olympic Stadium, dating from 1994. After the failure of Madrid’s bid to host the 2020 Olympic Games, Atletico de Madrid moved in. It leaves behind the mythical Vicente Calderon Stadium, which is due for demolition.
The Wanda Metropolitano takes its name from a naming contract with the Chinese company Wanda Group on the one hand, and from the name of one of the club’s former stadiums, the Estadio Metropolitano de Madrid, on the other. At its inauguration, two former glories of the club gave the fictitious kick-off. They were José Eugelio Garate and a certain Fernando Torres. The baptism of the first goal was orchestrated by Antoine Griezmann.
Atlético de Madrid plays its home games there every year. In the Spanish La Liga, every match counts to compete with the two giants of the country: FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. Lately, Atletico has had some success in achieving this mission. In terms of atmosphere, they will never do better than against the neighbouring rival in the Madrid derby against Real. You only have to look at the energy with which Diego Simeone harangued the Wanda Metropolitano public to feel the fervour that exists around the club. “El Cholo” Simeone is the emblematic coach of this club, known for its incomparable grinta.
In short, a match at the Wanda Metropolitano is an unforgettable experience on a football trip to Madrid, and this new stadium is a real gem.
