There are many ways to discover Lyon, but your way is probably the best !
The City of the Lights welcomes you for a weekend. This nickname is given to it in reference to the Festival of Lights, which takes place every year at the beginning of December. Millions of people come to Lyon to watch the sound and light shows on the most beautiful monuments of the city. Lyon has an abundant historical cultural heritage, to the delight of its visitors. Former capital of the Gauls, it offers you the opportunity to visit a Gallo-Roman archaeological site, a stone’s throw from the Fourvière Basilica which dominates the city and offers an exceptional panorama from Lyon to the Alps when the view is clear. Access by funicular, which departs from the heart of Old Lyon, the medieval and Renaissance quarter of the city. Venture into the narrow traboules and experience Lyon from the inside!
Lyon, a perfect city for a football trip
The Tête d’Or park, an ideal place to take a break in the city with its 117 hectares of natural beauty. It is also the place where the first professional football matches were played in Lyon! The city is meant to be a sporting city, it is quite possible that during your stay in Lyon, other matches will take place in other disciplines such as rugby (LOU) or basketball (ASVEL), all sports in which the people of the Rhône Valley excel.
Return to the city centre to visit the Halles Paul Bocuse de Lyon. The city is the capital of French gastronomy, and it won’t take you long to understand why. Savour the local specialities or go to a bouchon lyonnais in Old Lyon to taste them in an authentic atmosphere. Stroll around the Presqu’île and discover a new setting with squares and their splendid fountains and monuments, such as the Place Bellecour, or the Place des Terreaux.

Welcome to Lyon and to Groupama Stadium! A brand new stadium, built for the Euro 2016 football championship in France. The Groupama Stadium is the third largest stadium in the country and has been home to Olympique Lyonnais since it began operations in 2016. It succeeds the famous Gerland Stadium, where OL and its supporters have had their quarters since 1950 (although the latter has not lost any of its service, as it now hosts the LOU, the city’s flag rugby team). Continuing its past successes of the 2000s, OL intends to fill the trophy cabinet of its new stadium as much as Gerland’s was.
Initially named “Stade des Lumières” in reference to Lyon, the City of Lights, the Groupama Stadium will shortly afterwards be renamed “Parc Olympique Lyonnais”, before the commercial naming changes it to its current name. Comparable to English stadiums for its resonance, this ultra-modern venue offers a breathtaking view from any seat. Its architecture is also stunning and of a refined aestheticism, especially at night thanks to its lighting.
Meet the OL fans during your football trip to Lyon
In the grandstand, the atmosphere is resounding. The seasons of OL are punctuated by numerous confrontations with stakes, because the club has many rivals (Saint Etienne, Marseille, Paris…) and often competes for the first spots of the domestic championship and the European cups. During these encounters, the Groupama Stadium is full to bursting point and shouts with one voice to encourage its players. Moreover, Lyon’s supporter base is made up of numerous groups of supporters, including the largest group of supporters in France: the Bad Gones. Enough to brighten up your football trip to Lyon!
